By Monika Pociūtė, 2023.

Between the wars in Lithuania, efforts were made to take care of the welfare of needy people. Therefore, several shelter buildings were built where such people could receive food and accommodation. One of the largest shelter buildings in Lithuania at that time was designed in Kaunas in 1937. The building was built on Aukstaiciu Street and opened in December 1938. The author of the building is Karolis Reisonas. According to the original project, the building was supposed to be three-story, but later a four-story project was prepared, which was implemented. The building is rectangular in plan, with one corner Avant-corps located in the inner courtyard. The main facade is symmetrical, its exterior is rational. The main facade is divided by rows of vertical windows. To diversify the exterior, the windows in the corner parts are surrounded by vertical bands, and the central windows by horizontal bands. In the central part of the building there are two entrances, which are emphasized by two circular windows above them. The rear part of the building does not have such rich geometrical decoration and is divided by rows of simple rectangular windows and elongated balconies. Inside the building there were spacious rooms for shelter residents, a large dining room, a kitchen, and wide corridors. In addition, part of the roof of the building was designed to be flat, which could be used as a terrace. About 200 people could live in the building at one time.
