Kaunas, Lithuania

1 of 6

This is one of the many residential houses designed by the architect Stasys Kudokas in Kaunas. The design of the house was made in 1934. In this house the family of the composer Juozas Naujalis lived. He opened the first Lithuanian music school in Kaunas and became its director. This school later became a music conservatory.

The building has two floors and an original appearance. The floors of the building are separated by two cornices extending around the entire perimeter of the exterior. On the left side of the house, facing south, there are two balconies. The windows of the first floor of the main facade are framed by decorative rectangles, which create a kind of imitation of shutters found in folk architecture, or a rustic imitation, and between the windows of the second floor, in a small arched niche, a sculpture of Jesus Christ is placed - the architect Stasys Kudokas liked to insert sculptural elements in his projects. The asymmetric composition is emphasized by the main entrance located in one of the corners. The top of the building is emphasized by a wide strip of cornice, while the corners of the top are highlighted by short horizontal lines.
