The architect Aulenti has given Milan's Stazione Nord a new face. The plaza was rebuilt, organising routes in a way which centres around the pedestrian. The architectural elements and works of Claes Oldenburg and Coosje Van Bruggen have added rhythm and redefined the area. The result was that of a transformation relative to the relationships and connections with an architecture that, without being overwhelming, exercises an effect on those who pass through it, affecting their sensations and behavior. The elements added fit in with the previous architecture around the edges of the square, maintaining its sober character. The modern shapes and materials manage to fit in with the previous ones without dominating them but at the same time changing the square: the space previously dominated by traffic has been returned to people.
