nonconform architektur vor ort was founded in 1999 and is now directed by Roland Gruber, Peter Nageler, Caren Ohrhallinger and Katharina Kothmiller-Chorherr. The offices are located in Vienna and Carinthia.

nonconform architektur vor ort (architecture on site) has it's focus on spatial participation processes. They consider building in a wider range and develop strategies that engage into the regional and spatial planning in order to implement sustainable projects. They developed their own method, the so-called vor ort ideenwerkstatt® (On Site Ideas Workshop - www.vorortideenwerkstatt.at). The basic idea is to involve contractors and stakeholders in the process of brainstorming and development. They set up a temporary office per task locally in the community, the city, the school or the company or institution. They see the users as experts for everyday life in their environment - it quickly becomes clear what the real concerns are. Live and together with all involved we are working on specific solutions for several days. So the idea generation is transparent, process-like and jointly. The contractor and his/her participating environment can engage and participate in each phase. This promotes confidence and the identification of those involved and affected by the developed ideas. Somewhat less frequently, external experts are brought into the team. The on site ideas workshop expands the tasks of architects and planners - they also work as anchormen and communication facilitators, as managers of visions and ideas in the run-up of a planning and building process. The collaborative and creative process is managed by special techniques of moderation, events, workshops, open space dialogues, interviews etc. The inputs is immediately being processed into concepts, ideas and finally - a holistic scenario.

In 2011, they initiated the Austrian Leerstandskonferenz (Vacancy Conferece - www.leerstandskonferenz.at) and since then curate it every year. This office own think tank concerned with the conflict between the vacancy problem in the Alpine region and the multiple questions of the production and use of the built environment. Every year there is a different focus (eg city center and vacancy, shrinkage in the Alpine region, failure in architecture, vacancy and school, etc.).
