The structures second life

'Building in a Building' was a proposal conceived for the 2011 Art of Living Festival held at The House of World Culture in Berlin. The proposal by FAT Koehl Architekten was designed with a series of timber boxes that were inserted around the site and under the existing, 7049|arched building.

The design consisted of a collection of eight interwoven, temporary structures which played host to a range of events curated by the festival, including screenings and 7045|lectures. The series of boxes were constructed out of paneled timber with exposed spines, interlocking underneath the existing curved pavilion of 'The House of World Culture' (HKW).

An integral component to this project is its ongoing use and life-cycle. Following the festival, the wooden structures were dismantled and reused for a new purpose in 2012 and beyond.
