The building of the Sea was inaugurated on April 7th 2011, was designed by Atelier Pedro Campos Costa - PCC Architects. The architect decided to create a building that was not simply an architectural piece isolated, but to respond to urban problems and a dialogue with the existing building without straddling him. It is an avant-garde design framed with the surroundings. This equipment is a new part of the Lisbon Oceanarium and located in the Nations Park Campus with a new set of services that will strengthen its role in promoting awareness of the oceans.
Sea Building has an area of 1000 m2 deployment. The building includes a temporary exhibition hall, an auditorium, a restaurant and a new reception area for visitors. A facade has an effect that makes it look like it is covered with scales. This effect was achieved with about seven thousand pieces of ceramics, constituting the facade an artistic piece whose author is Toni Cumella. Toni Cumella was responsible for the restoration, among others, the Park Guell in Barcelona. The thermal efficiency is ensured by the fact that the facade be doubly ventilated.
