Halina Skibniewska (January 10th 1921 - April 20 2011) was Polish architect and urbanist, professor of architecture, state activist, deputy to the of People's Republic of Poland through IV, V, VI VII and VIII terms, 1971-1985 deputy Marshal of People's Republic of Poland (Sejm).

Her husband, the architect Zygmunt Skibniewski was also a deputy to the People's Republic of Poland.

Career

She graduated from the Warsaw University of Technology in 1948. In 1948-1949 she worked in the Capital Rebuilding Office (BOS). Prof. Romuald Gutt hired her as an assistant at the Faculty of Architecture at Warsaw University of Technology. Since 1946 she was a designer in his architectural studio. She was involved in the design of the GUS building in Warsaw and the reconstruction of the National Theater. From Gutta she learned to treat architectural design as a combination of creative invention, technical skills and humanistic and social attitudes.

Since 1957 she worked at the Warsaw Housing Cooperative (WSM). Strongly associated with Zoliborz, she designed Sady Zoliborskie, which is considered one of the best of those years. Her projects were mainly modernist with many original solutions, including the use of natural greenery (sady Zoliborskie) or decorative fragments from the ruins of historical objects (Szwolezer housing estate).

From 1975 to 1985 she was a professor at the Warsaw University of Technology. Her scientific interests focused on issues related to human life in the city, the social function of residential buildings, the ecology of the city. She also dealt with the adaptation of dwellings to the needs of people with disabilities.

Member of the Committees of the Polish Academy of Sciences (Committee for Architecture and Urban Planning, PAN, Rehabilitation and Social Adaptation Commission of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Polish Forecasting Commission 2000; Polish Spatial Development Committee), Warsaw Scientific Association and Polish Architecture Council. Member of several foreign scientific organizations, including Academie d'Architecture de France.

A long-time Polish correspondent of the architectural magazine L'Architecture d'Aujourd'hui.
