Julian Elliot's best known project has been the coordination and development of the design for the University of Zambia, which, when it was produced, was in the forefront of thinking about new universities. The careful control of open space, the creation of linking elements between buildings, an ingenious lineal plan which allowed for growth, and the meticulous approuch to the programming of the project are its most impressive characteristics. There is a sure attitude to form in all of Eliott's work - for exemple, his use in the Kasama Cathedral and in several houses of brick barrel vaults together with crisp detailing of voids and openings gives the buildings a sharp and characteristic form. There is olso in his work an appealing amphaty with older traditions in South Africa.
