The distinctive group of three needles at the edge of the Arabian Gulf, in the heart of Kuwait City, were designed as national icons in the oil boom of the 1970s. The interiors were symbolically vandalized during the Iraqi occupation in 1990, and fully restored thereafter. Kuwait Towers is one of the main tourist attractions in the State of Kuwait. The towers were designed by Swedish architect Sune Lindstrom and constructed by a Yugoslav company. They were built in 1975 and inaugurated in 1979. The plates that cover the balls are fifty five thousand in number. They are made of Chinese steel painted in eight different colors.
