Adam Gottlieb Hermann Muthesius (April 20th, 1861 - October 29th, 1927), known as Hermann Muthesius, was a German architect, theoretician, author and diplomat, perhaps best known for promoting many of the ideas of the English Arts and Crafts movement within Germany and for his subsequent influence on early pioneers of German architectural modernism such as the Bauhaus. He was a central founder of the Deutsche Werkbund and authored numerous books including Das englische Haus, which remains a work of reference today. Muthesius believed that "architecture is the Mother of the Arts" and, if executed properly, would speak "an eloquent language beyond the spirit of its time".
