Description Change this

Silver Hut was designed by Ito as his own residence, the house was located adjacent to his sister's house, White U (House), which he designed six years earlier.

Architecture

The arch-like roof was made from rhombic shaped frames that bridged over beams placed on concrete pillars set at 3.6m intervals.

The buildings extruded dome roofs were clustered together to form living spaces underneath. There was also careful consideration to blend the outside and inside together. Developing the ideas explored in White U, Ito furthered these ideas with architecture that felt like air and wind.

Silver Hut won the Architecture Institute of Japan Award in 1986.

Replica

"Silver Hut", has been replicated for workshop activities and events at the Toyo Ito Museum of Architecture on Omishima, a small island overlooking the Seto Indland Sea. The reenacted building sits in a valley at the bottom of a hill, alongside the new museum structure.

In this copy there are three main spaces - an archive space for visitors to review architectural drawings of approximately 90 works of Toyo Ito, an outdoor workshop space and a space with furniture designed by Teruaki Ohashi which was used in the original "Silver Hut". The outdoor workshop space with roof is a comfortable place with adequate wind flows, and it can be used not only for workshops with local people but also as a relaxation spot for visitors to freely enjoy and look at the sea.
