The Broughton House was the first contact with a land Ellwood did at one of the most common situations in Los Angeles. The land on which stood the plot was abrupt. Ellwood resolved these difficulties raising the living area to the first floor to avoid traffic vision and summoning the garage and service spaces under the high volume of the living area. The requirements for the project were typical: two bedrooms and a bathroom. Ellwood completed the modest volume by adding a sun terrace next to the living area, which shows the importance attached to the exterior spaces.
