In 2007, NORD were appointed to work with EDF Energy and Olympic Development Agency to develop a strong contextual approach to a key utility building in the Olympic Park.

A number of structures are required to house infrastructure for both the 2012 Games and Legacy. The electricity substation was the first utility building to come forward for detailed planning permission and the design will influence other local utility buildings. NORD and EDF have worked closely with the Olympic Delivery Authority [ODA] to develop a scheme that is enduring.

The building is not an event in its own right but part of a number of buildings forming the fabric of the site; having permanency, weight and dignity. The approach evolved from an understanding of the material qualities in London's industrial brick heritage, the appearance celebrates the honesty and functionality where the sensitive but creative use of materials results in a landmark building rooted in its industrial heritage.
