Hertl Architekten was founded in 2000 by Gernot Hertl and is set in the city centre of Steyr. Their work has received international recognition in only a few years. Through early publications and increasing project dimensions the practice became one of Austria's best known architecture studios. The breadth of realized projects ranges from cultural via residential to commercial buildings and from social housing to the small garden cabin.

Gernot Hertl was born in Steyr | Upper Austria in 1971 and studied Architecture at the Technical University Graz | Austria. After graduating in 1997 and some years of work experience he founded his own practice in Steyr. Between 2000 and 2002 he collaborated with Josef Steinberger. He was member of the board in several institutions such as 'Architekturforum Oberosterreich', 'Ortsbildbeirat' of Upper Austria and the Chamber of Architects and Engineering Consults of Upper Austria and Salzburg.

Between 2016 and 2017 he was visiting professor at the Technical University of Vienna, Institute of Architecture and Design, Department of Spatial Design. In 2017 he was visiting lecturer at Virginia Tech School of Architecture + Design in Blacksburg.
